Renaming a single file isn’t a difficult or a time-consuming task. Renaming tens or even hundreds of files is a difficult and a time-consuming task – and it is for that reason that you must turn to specialized software for help. The aptly titled application Rename is such a specialized piece of software. With this simple tool you can rename files as you see fit. You can remove certain elements from the name, add custom elements to the name, replace parts of the name, and more.

To get started with Rename on your PC you will first have to download a 4.7MB archive and extract its contents. Then you will have to run the rename_win executable and click through the instructions presented by a setup wizard. Once the wizard is done installing Rename on your PC, you can start using the application.

The application’s interface is divided into three sections. At the top there’s a traditional File Menu and a toolbar with nice big buttons for various functions the application has to offer. Underneath there’s a Profile section that features tabs for all the renaming options you can access: Remove, Add, Replace, Number, List, Build, Name Extension. And down at the bottom there is a preview pane that lists the files you loaded and previews their new names.

Using Rename is a straightforward matter that can be broken down into three steps: load some files, set up some renaming rules, rename the files. The nice thing is that there are numerous renaming options to go through: eliminate certain elements from the filename; add a prefix, suffix, or insert elements into the filename; replace part of the filename with something else; add a number to the filename; build a filename, use a predefined template to build the filename; uppercase, lowercase, capitalize the filename and/or the extension.

Rename has a preview function. So as you play with the rules, you get to see the new filenames. When you’re happy with the results, just hit a button and the files you loaded will be renamed.

Please note that Rename is free to use for a limited period of time.

What’s great about Rename is that it puts lots of renaming options at your disposal. With this tool you can very easily rename all the files you want.

Pros

Downloading and installing Rename on a Windows PC will not take long; Rename is also available for Mac. There is nothing complicated about the interface; even a novice will quickly figure things out. There are multiple renaming rules you can play with. There’s a handy preview function.

Cons

Nag screen.
